What Does a School Counselor Do?
The Role of a Professional School Counselor

According to the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), School Counselors, "serve a vital role in maximizing student success (Lapan, Gysbers, & Kayson, 2007; Stone & Dahir,2006). Through leadership, advocacy and collaboration, school counselors promote equity and access to rigorous educational experiences for all students. School counselors support a safe learning environment and work to safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community (Sandhu, 2000) and address the needs of all students through culturally relevant prevention and intervention programs that are a part of a comprehensive school counseling program (Lee, 2001)." Why Middle School Counselors?

Middle school students are at the unique stage in life when everything is changing and emotions can start to take control. "Today’s young people are living in an exciting time, with an increasingly diverse society, new technologies, and expanding opportunities. To help ensure that they are prepared to become the next generation of parents, workers, leaders and citizens, every student needs support, guidance and opportunities during adolescence, a time of rapid growth and change. Early adolescents face unique and diverse challenges, both personally and developmentally, that have an impact on academic achievement." (ASCA, 2016)
